Getting a secure link to a remote site is a key priority especially in the present age of cybersecurity threats. A VPN connection is a solution that ensures that companies can share IT resources with branch offices spread across the country. Even for a PBX phone system supplier in Nairobi Kenya. In short, VPN technology was invented to assure a secure link between two or more private networks.

For instance, a VPN connection will enable a company with a remote office outside town to connect to an ERP system at the main office in the central business district. Fortunately, nowadays most routers come the VPN feature to help you set up a link secure between two offices.

In as much as ordinary routers can provide reliable VPN tunnels, network firewalls such as Sophos Firewall remain your best bet for network protection.

Setting up a VPN connection tunnel

To set up a VPN tunnel, you need to log on to the local router. The router management interface is usually available at 192.168.1.1. Go to advanced settings. From there, you can navigate to the VPN tab. When the configuration page is opened, just click on Add New to create a new VPN trunk.

On the configuration page, you will have to fill in the following details:

Connection Name: The connection name helps you distinguish between different VPN tunnels. So, it is important to assign a unique name on any new VPN link created.

Remote gateway IP: this is the Public IP address of the router in your branch office. Very important.

Local IP address (LAN IP): this is the private IP address for the local area network for the head office. Also a very important setting.

how to configure VPN connection

When you are done with the local router configuration, you can log on to the remote router and repeat the same configurations. To avoid confusion, it is advisable that you use the same router model for both local and remote sites.

Upon complete configurations of the routers, test the connection by pinging the private IP address of the remote LAN.

Benefits of setting up a secure network link

Be that as it may, a VPN tunnel is the secure link connecting private networks so that active devices inside the local area networks can communicate securely.

Thus, a telephone extension in a remote office can dial another telephone extension in the head office as though they were connected within the same local area network. Likewise, the IT officer in the head office can call the remote extension as if connected within the same network even though in actual sense the two are in different networks.
